  • Balm of Gilead was first mentioned in the bible, where King Salomo gave it to the Queen of Sheba. In the bible, the Balm of Gilead was a cure-all. But it actually refers to a different tree than the one we use here in Canada, which is the Cottonwood Poplar. Many herbalists in North America view Cotton Wood Balm in a similar light as the plant grown in Israel. It is the spring cottonwood buds that are used in medicine and perfumery. Some of the most impressive health benefits of our Balm of Gilead include its ability to reduce inflammation, soothe the skineliminate pain, and speed up healing. Its antibacterial, anti-fungal, and mildly analgesic properties make this balm a wonderful first-aid salve. It is most commonly used on minor cuts, scrapes, and burns as well as rashes. You can apply Balm of Gilead to your chest in the form of a warm rub before you go to sleep. This can help to clear up coughs and colds, both by absorbing into the skin and being inhaled as your skin naturally heats the oil. The expectorant nature of the Balm of Gilead can help expel mucus and phlegm, which speeds the healing process.
